ELEVEN

Seagulls cawing nearby awakened Gianna. She was a light sleeper, so it didn’t take much to make her eyes spring open from slumber. Throughout the night, every little inch Farah made had Gianna lifting up to check on her as if she was a newborn baby.

Gianna leaned over and kissed Farah’s forehead. Her heart became heavy when she thought about what Tamar asked Aasir last night. She couldn’t stop thinking about what he said happened to Farah’s mother. Gianna’s mind wandered to how the woman looked, wanting to know if she and Aasir were together at the time of her death. She wanted to know how long ago the accident was.

Sighing, Gianna turned on her other side, away from Farah, and stared toward the window. The morning light was making its way into the sky. Gianna’s thoughts shifted to the moment Aasir moved close to her on the couch. The woody scent of his cologne had caused her stomach to flutter. She wondered if he felt the electricity between them or was it just her. She smiled at the thought of ‘what if’ he was her as one… that just maybe God had actually heard her prayers.

Knowing she wouldn’t find sleep again any time soon, Gianna eased out of bed and grabbed her cell. She looked back at Farah, ensuring she wouldn’t roll off the bed before making her way downstairs to the kitchen. When she made it to the end of the steps, the sounds of light snoring caught her attention. Giggling under her breath, Gianna stepped over to the living room before making the left into the kitchen.

While the house was still, she took advantage of the time she had to get a good look at Aasir. Gianna slightly shook her head and smirked at the sight of his body that was too long to rest comfortably on the small couch. Lying on his back with one arm and leg dangling to the floor, Aasir had made away. The way his other arm was rested across his forehead, Gianna couldn’t tell if he was actually uncomfortable.

She tiptoed a bit closer, continuing to watch Aasir while he slept. She admired how well-groomed he was, his beard was freshly trimmed and the short sponge twists in his hair were tidy and fresh. Gianna then looked on the coffee table; his watch and wallet were lined neatly on the tabletop. Her eyes darted at Aasir as he shifted to his side on the couch. Gianna quickly turned and headed into the kitchen.

Turning the cold water knob, she filled the coffee pot to the max. She thought about her job and how she missed having a fresh cup every morning before starting her day. While she finished prepping the coffeemaker, Gianna’s cell buzzed with a text message. She then pulled out some cinnamon rolls. After putting them in the oven, she took a seat at the table and checked her message.

Considering the time of the morning, Gianna figured the text was from no one but her mother.
